Thessaloniki Vlatadon Monastery

Thessaloniki Vlatadon Monastery

Vlatadon Monastery is located at the very top of Thessaloniki’s old city near the walls that reside close to the Acropolis. Its name comes from its founders (Vlatades brothers, Dorotheos and Markos) who were raised to sainthood. It dates back to the middle 14th century (Approc.1351-1371) and during that time it was known as the Monastery of the Pantocrator.

Vlatadon monastery, is also close to Heptapyrgion and the old castle of Thessaloniki. It is the only monastery from the Byzantine times that still operates.

During the Ottoman times the monastery was occupied by the Ottoman Turks but it continued to function as the Ottoman Turks honored its status as patriarchal. It main church though was converted into a mosque. The church’s interior frescoes, as many frescoes from other Christian monuments of the Byzantine times, were covered with plaster and after the end of the Ottoman period were once again revealed.

Although the monastery has suffered many damages over the years, some of its original features (interior wall paintings) are still preserved. In recent years the Vlatadon monastery has been further renovated and expanded.
