View from Thessaloniki Old Town – Castle’s Area
The area of the Upper Town of Thessaloniki (Thessaloniki Old Town | Castles) survived the big fire of 1917. It is situated in the north part of the old city (see point 13 in the map below). It starts from the famous street St. Demetrios reaching at the north until the Heptapyrgion. Heptapyrgion was built during the Ottoman period (in 1431) and used to be the headquarters of the military governor of Thessaloniki which became also a prison during the Ottoman period of the city’s history. Heptapyrgion is located at the north part of the Acropolis (Byzantine castle of Thessaloniki) and the Byzantines Walls from the west and east side respectively.
Many of the current houses in the old town of Thessaloniki were built during the Ottoman Period. Many of these houses have spectacular view to the sea. In this region the traveler can find many Byzantine Churches which are listed inside the Unesco list of protected monuments. In addition, old monuments from the Ottoman period of Thessaloniki, like Baths, Hamam’s and Mosques also exist in this area and can also be visited.
Apart from this, the Upper Town of Thessaloniki is a place to be discovered by any traveler who wishes to walk around the old buildings, the narrow cobbled streets, the dead ends, the small clearings with the fantastic view to the Thermaikos gulf and the old squares. The area is unique in simplicity, functionality, and elegance and it is characteristic for its Macedonian architecture. People who like cats will love Thessaloniki’s Upper Town as beautiful cats can be seen everywhere. The Upper Town is an area in which many old people live since due to its position and the fact that the streets are small, the access by car is not easy and in most occasions not possible at all.
If you love old towns and like sightseeing this is a place to visit for sure. You will need to be though in good fitness in order to discover it walking as there are many slopes to pass!
