Thessaloniki Church of Holly Apostles
The Church of Holy Apostles, is located at the north side of Thessaloniki’s city center, close to the Vardaris Square and the west walls of the city. The church belongs to the Paleochristian Monuments of Thessaloniki and is listed in the Unesco’s protected Cultural Heritage. The church was built during the late Byzantine times of Thessaloniki (approx. 1310-1314). As some of the church’s main wall paintings illustrate Marian scenes, the church was probably dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Some magnificent frescoes which date back to the end of the Byzantine times of Thessaloniki (1328-1334) are still preserved inside the monument. They are some of the latest ones before the Byzantine empire start to downtrend.
As most of Byzantine monuments of that time, the Church of Holy Apostles was transformed into a mosque during the Ottoman times. This happened approx. between 1520-1530 and the church was renamed to Soguk Su Camii which means the mosque of the cold water due to a nearby hamam that used to exist (Pasha Hamam).
During the earthquake of 1978 the temple suffered many damages. Serious maintenance and renovation work took place after the earthquake in order to keep it in the good condition it currently is.
