Thessaloniki City Walls

Thessaloniki city walls, date back to the Thessaloniki’s Byzantine times and are of a great archaeological interest. The city walls were build in order to protect the city from attackers from its north side. They were built as an addition to the Roman city walls and more additions plus some significant repairs were made also during Thessaloniki’s Ottoman times.

During the byzantine times the city walls were built with stones and mortar and during Ottoman times the additions that were made were built with ordinary bricks. The city walls perimeter was seven km long but in our days almost 3 km are saved. Their height varies from 8.3m to 12m, they have a trapezoid shape and they are connected with small towers. In our days approximately sixty towers are saved which mostly have square shape except from the White Tower and the Trigonion Chain Tower that have round shape probably because they were build at earlier times. Walking along the city walls area and enjoying the view from the Trigonion Chain Tower is an experience that should not be missed
